What are Scallop Pintucks?

Scalloped pintucks are a variation of traditional pintucks, distinguished by their curved or scalloped edges. These pintucks are created by folding and stitching fabric in a wave-like pattern, resulting in a series of soft, rounded ridges. When done on sleeves, scalloped pintucks can transform a plain sleeve into a statement piece, adding depth and dimension.

How to Create Scallop Pintucks on Sleeves

  1. Prepare Your Sleeve: Start with a plain sleeve pattern. Mark the desired locations for the pintucks on the sleeve using chalk or a fabric marker.
  2. Cut the Fabric: Cut strips of fabric on the bias (diagonally across the grain) that are slightly wider than the desired pintuck width. The bias-cut fabric will allow the pintucks to curve smoothly around the sleeve.
  3. Fold and Press: Fold the fabric strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press to create a crease. This will be the centerline of your pintuck.
  4. Create the Scalloped Edge: Using a curved ruler or a template, mark a scalloped edge along one side of the fabric strip. Cut along the marked line to create the scalloped edge.
  5. Stitch the Pintuck: Place the scalloped edge of the fabric strip along the marked line on the sleeve. Stitch close to the edge of the fabric to secure the pintuck in place. Repeat this process for each pintuck, ensuring they are evenly spaced and aligned.
  6. Finish the Sleeve: After all the pintucks are stitched, press the sleeve to set the seams and give the pintucks a crisp appearance. Trim any excess fabric from the seam allowances.
  7. Optional Embellishments: For added flair, consider adding decorative stitching, beads, or sequins along the pintucks to enhance their beauty.
